Phoenix Takes Action Against Extreme Heat
In the wake of the hottest summer ever recorded in Phoenix, Arizona, a collaborative effort is underway to combat the increasing threat of extreme heat in the city. Community Engagement and Solutions
Dozens of south Phoenix locals recently gathered at a community garden to share their concerns and ideas on how to cool their neighborhood amidst rising temperatures driven by climate change. They identified key areas in the community where trees could provide much-needed shade, such as bus stops, parking lots, schools, and grocery stores. University students and local community group members documented their feedback, which was then mapped by researchers from Arizona State University. This data will be used to develop a localized shade plan as part of the city’s Urban Tree Program.

The Greater Phoenix Urban Forestry Accelerator, a new three-year project led by ASU in collaboration with local partners, aims to plant trees to mitigate the city’s scorching summers while creating job opportunities for residents. The initiative includes paid learning opportunities in landscape design and water conservation, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in combating extreme heat.

Mark Champion, a lifelong resident of south Phoenix, has witnessed firsthand the impact of rising temperatures on his community. Attending workshops for the shade program, Champion is optimistic about the positive changes it will bring, including more shade, job creation, and overall community enhancement. As a resident of an underserved neighborhood, he believes that investing in shade and green spaces can improve the quality of life for all residents.
By engaging with community members, planting trees strategically, and creating job opportunities in the forestry industry, Phoenix is taking proactive steps to address the urgent issue of extreme heat. As the city moves forward with its plans, the hope is to create a more sustainable and resilient urban environment for all its residents.
