So, like, at this energy security summit in London, around 60 government officials were super opinionated about fossil fuels and renewable energy, you know? The US was all about fossil fuels, while the UK, EU, and some other countries were all, like, “clean energy is the way to go for energy security.” Not really sure why this matters, but it’s a big deal, apparently.
The International Energy Agency’s Summit for the Future of Energy Security went down in London at Lancaster House, which is like a stand-in for Buckingham Palace in some show called ‘The Crown’. The UK’s minister for net zero and energy security was all like “sustainable energy systems are the way to go” and stuff.
Then the UK’s prime minister was talking about how the UK has been super affected by international fossil fuel prices and how it’s messed up the economy. Since the 1970s, like, half of the UK’s recessions have been because of fossil fuel shocks, apparently.
The European Commission’s President was praising the US for providing gas during the energy crisis, but also talking about how renewables are super important for the bloc’s resilience and stuff.
Barbados was talking about how fossil fuel generation is super bad for them ’cause of sea level rise and the climate crisis. They spent over $1 billion on importing fossil fuels in 2024.
Then the US was criticizing renewables, blaming power cuts in Puerto Rico on renewables.
Some energy experts were saying it’s better to rely on other countries for equipment rather than fuel, but then there was this person from China saying something about decarbonizing and decoupling from China.
At the summit, there were people from Iraq and Egypt talking about how fossil fuels are super important for energy production and stuff.
Outside the summit, there was this campaigner saying that investing in cheap homegrown renewables is the way to go for real energy security and lower bills.
Also, oil and gas companies were there, discussing oil and gas security and affordability. Some climate protesters were outside chanting stuff about not wanting oil and gas anymore.
