So, why should you believe in us? Well, back in 2005, we started as this little environmental newspaper in Ohio. Fast forward to today, and EcoWatch has become this awesome digital platform that’s all about sharing top-notch, science-based content on environmental issues, causes, and solutions. Pretty cool, right?

The world is hustling to put a stop to global warming by kicking fossil fuels to the curb, all in line with our climate goals. And guess what? A recent study found that achieving a decent standard of living for everyone on this planet is totally doable if we get our act together and cut down on emissions, like, ASAP.

The brains behind this research? None other than Jarmo Kikstra, a research scholar leading the charge with the Energy, Climate and Environment Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Their study delved into energy scenarios that align with both the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Hold up, did you know that billions of peeps out there are still struggling to meet basic needs while climate change is cranking up the heat? According to IIASA, tackling both challenges at the same time isn’t just a pipe dream—it’s an absolute must. And that’s where these energy scenarios come into play, making sure everyone has access to essentials like cozy homes, clean cooking, healthcare, education, and transportation.

Using this fancy new DESIRE model, the research squad compared sustainable development scenarios with the same old, same old trends we’ve been following. And guess what they found? The sustainable route slashes the number of folks who aren’t getting enough energy for their basic needs by a whopping 90%! That’s a way speedier progress than if we just keep doing what we’re doing now.

It’s not just about lifting people out of poverty. Nope, we’re talking about creating futures where everyone worldwide gets to enjoy decent living standards as a bare minimum. And hey, it’s not as tough as it sounds. The emissions needed to support these standards are actually way lower than the total emissions we’re seeing globally.

The study’s co-author, Shonali Pachauri, knows what’s up. She’s all about pushing for efficiency, growth, and fairness to make sure everyone has their fair share of resources. Because let’s be real, it’s not just about having more services—it’s about using them wisely and making sure they go to those who need ’em most.

This study, titled “Closing decent living gaps in energy and emissions scenarios: introducing DESIRE,” was recently published in Environmental Research Letters. Its authors are all about merging climate action with development efforts. They’re warning us that without solid climate policies, we’ll be way off track from meeting even the most basic needs without overshooting the Paris Agreement’s limits.

So, what’s the bottom line? Well, it turns out that we’d only need about a third of the world’s energy consumption to support decent living standards. The other two-thirds? Well, they’re being put toward stuff that goes beyond just meeting basic needs. Imagine a future where over half of the global population, including folks in low-income countries, get to enjoy living standards that are more than twice the minimum guideline for decent living. Sounds pretty rad, right?

According to IIASA, this dreamy future could be a reality in the next couple of decades—if we get our act together, that is. So, let’s roll up our sleeves, cut those emissions, and make sure everyone gets to live the good life they deserve.
