In a paper titled “Sabah’s hidden giant: Nepenthes pongoides (Nepenthaceae), a micro-endemic tropical pitcher plant from northern Borneo,” the researchers detail their expedition to the Meliau Range in central Sabah. On the third day of their expedition, the researchers stumbled upon a cluster of igneous boulders that seemed ideal for a rainwater-capturing plant. They carefully documented the habitat, population, and ecological data of Nepenthes pongoides while minimizing any negative impacts on the fragile ecosystem.

The plant’s leaves, covered in long red hair reminiscent of orangutans native to the region, inspired the name Nepenthes pongoides, meaning “resembling orangutan.” With its large size, peltate tendril exsertion, and absence of upper pitchers, this species stands out as a botanical marvel.
