California Resident Eric Haas Saves Water and Money with Rainwater and Greywater System
In a world where climate change is becoming an increasingly urgent issue, one California resident has taken matters into his own hands to reduce water usage by two-thirds in just one week. Eric Haas, a 62-year-old California professor, moved to Oakland in 2007 and witnessed firsthand the severe drought conditions plaguing the state.
Haas decided to make a difference by installing a rainwater and greywater capture system at his highly efficient urban home. This system, installed by local contractor Dig Cooperative Inc, allows him to collect rainwater from his roof and reuse water from showers, sinks, and washing machines to water his garden and fruit trees.
The Impact of Haas’ Efforts
Haas’ efforts have not only reduced his water usage significantly but have also saved him money on his water bill. While the average household in his area uses 124 gallons of water per day, Haas now only uses 39 gallons per day, less than a third of the average.
The initial cost of the project was around $15,000, but the long-term savings on his water bill make it a worthwhile investment. Haas estimates that he saves about $220 a year on his water bill, in addition to the environmental benefits of conserving water.
Challenges and Rewards of Water Conservation
Haas acknowledges that living in California requires a different approach to water usage due to the state’s frequent droughts. He highlights the importance of using innovative solutions like rainwater and greywater systems to reduce the strain on the water supply.
Despite the challenges, Haas finds joy in interacting with the natural environment through his water conservation efforts. He takes pride in hearing the sound of the greywater pump or the rainwater system filling up, knowing that he is making a tangible impact on water conservation.
