So, like, big-time researchers from Dartmouth College, who are like super smart, found out that these huge companies have messed up the climate to the tune of $28 trillion. Can you even believe it? It’s like, whoa.
They’re saying that this new study is going to help make these companies pay for the damage they’ve done. It’s all about holding them accountable or something.
The researchers looked at like 111 companies, and found that over half the damage came from just 10 of them. Like, Chevron, BP, Shell, ExxonMobil, and others are on the naughty list.
Gazprom and Saudi Aramco are like the worst offenders, causing over $2 trillion each in heat damage. Not cool, guys.
The total damage is almost as much as the entire U.S. economy produced in 2024. That’s a lot of dough.
They also said that for every percent of greenhouse gases we’ve pumped into the air since 1990, it’s cost us $502 billion in heat damage. And that’s not even counting all the other bad stuff like droughts and hurricanes.
So, like, this lead researcher guy Christopher Callahan from Stanford University says this study is going to help figure out who’s to blame for all this climate mess. Sounds like a big deal.
There have been like 68 lawsuits filed over climate damage already, with most of them in the U.S. People are trying to figure out who should pay for all this mess.
This other researcher dude, Justin Mankin, says that we can totally blame individual companies for the harm they’ve caused. It’s like, science has all the answers now.
So, they figured out that Chevron’s pollution alone has made the Earth’s surface temperature go up by 0.45 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not good.
They also calculated how much pollution each company put out on the planet’s five hottest days. It’s like a crazy science experiment with 80 computer simulations.
Mankin says this study proves that we can totally blame these big companies for the damage they’ve done. No more excuses.
In the past, it was hard to figure out how much damage each company had done because the data was all over the place. But now, science has got it all figured out. No more hiding.
This study was published in some fancy journal called Nature. Sounds like a big deal.
